News From the Cleveland Sailing Association Volume III Number 3
June 15, 2011

The CSA 2011 series season officially started this past weekend at the Mentor Regatta. Tartan 10's and Ensign's competed in one design classes with two Phrf and a JAM division rounding out the competitor fleets. Hunter Chisholm the Regatta organizer did a masterful job of ensuring the regatta was a first class event.
On the Friday before the Regatta, the famed television sports anchor Tony Zarrella of WOIO climbed aboard a Beneteau 36.7 and was introduced to the sport of sail racing. His story, Mentor Regatta results, and photographs of the racing can all be found at......you guessed it, clevelandsails.com.
The FW Roberts Race starts Friday evening at CYC to commence the CSA South Shore Series. There is still time to enter. I wish fair winds and following seas for that classic.
Cleveland Race Week also begins Friday with the Tartan 10 Lake Erie Championships. On Tuesday, June 21, we begin our Women's and Double-handed racing. NCWSA BOATS HAVE NO EXCUSES FOR NOT APPEARING ON THE SCRATCH SHEET! There, I said it. Nasty grams available by request.
Double-handed sailing has grown over the past few years. This event offers opportunities for short handed teams, couples, and those who have brawn to either show off exemplary sailing skills or simply to be out on the water on the summer solstice and enjoy themselves while being a part of Cleveland Race Week.
Are you a JAM sailor? Pull the crew together and enjoy a free open invitational JAM race and party at Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club on Saturday, June 18th. All the information you need can be found....where you ask?.....clevelandsails.com.
If you are planning to attend this years Burning River Fest? Use the CSA promotional code when purchasing your tickets on-line. Whats the secret CSA code you wonder? ....of course you can find it at clevelandsails.com.
See us at Cleveland Race Week for CSA t-shirts, the new CSA 15 month calendar, and CSA series information. Scratch sheets will be made after Cleveland Race Week. Meanwhile, see the CSA yachts and current entries at.....clevelandsails.com.
With the sunset of the longest day of the year in the western sky and the nearly full moon rising over the city skyline, celestial events blanket Cleveland Race Week. On June 21st, there is no place in the world I'd rather be than out on the water as a witness. Not even Stonehenge.
As always, I look forward to seeing you at the Start Line.

In April after our successful pre season breakfast, I thought when it became late spring around here I would send a CSA update. Did I miss something? I don't recall any springtime.
For boat owners, fitting out is stressful in expectedly good weather. I'm sure there were boat owners in CSA land who ended up having a short stay at "Happy Achers" where they spent the day talking to the flooded flower beds. For those now rested and recovering souls, we welcome you to the start of the 2011 sailing season.
Yikes, it's the first weekend of June. No time to waste.
The first CSA Boat Of The Year event of this season is the Mentor Regatta. This year, a local television crew will be present filming and reporting the racing and regatta events. Ever wanted to get on the local TV news for all the right reasons? Now might be your chance. Make the effort to get to Mentor and exorcise the bad spring demons. Remember, CSA boats are granted Wednesday to Wednesday dock privilidges and receive a 10.00 discount on the regatta entry fee. All the information you need is at $(CSAStartLine_Full).
Our on-the-water photographer Dave Mathias will also be at Mentor, not sailing as he wishes, but photographing the racing. Do you want a great picture of your boat at the start, rounding the marks, finishing? It can't be photographed if it's not there. Speaking of great photographs, 16 of our most compelling photographs will be featured in our 16 month CSA calendar. The calendar spans the dates from September 2011 - December 2012. It will be available for sale in a few weeks.
The South Shore Cruising Series starts Friday evening, June 17, with the 81st Annual F.W. Roberts Race at the Cleveland Yacht Club. Free docks are offered at CYC from June 15 to June 22 for travel to Cleveland Race Week. The wake up signal is at 20:24 hrs. Get in that afternoon nap kids. The course is 45 miles. Sights and sounds along the course include the Cleveland Waterworks Intake crib, the Lorain Harbor outer break-wall and Avon Point(s). The Roberts Race trophy is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
Do you need crew? Do you want to crew? Do you need help transporting your boat to the regattas and races? Is the inflated price of gasoline causing you to not turn on the air conditioner? The Crew & Ride Share area of the CSA web site is a resource designed to assist you with all of these persistent needs.

| | Saturday, March 12, 2011 - Spring Ahead - Cleveland Sailing Association | Dear $(FirstWComma)
Today, Saturday, the earth will cross a point in its elliptical orbit where, according to Kepler, the orbital velocity will change slightly, resulting in a .007 degree change in the axial tilt. Thus, the sunrise and sunset times will abruptly change by one hour. So to keep up, you'll need to set your clocks ahead.
For most of us, that atomic wrist watch we own that's in sync with the race committee, is probably somewhere. Maybe in a drawer on the boat, or that hastily designated place we chose when the boat was hauled out months ago. If only we could call it like we do when we misplace our cell phones.
The Cleveland Sailing Association understands. While the atomic watch of yours has been hibernating waiting for you to find it, we've been busy planning for the 2011 sailing season.
Here are the highlights:
CSA registrants receive a 10.00 regatta registration discount, or equivalent compensation, for each CSA Boat of the Year designated regatta entered. (Do the math, you win).
Free Wednesday to Wednesday docking at all CSA designated events. (Do the math, you win again).
Invitation to the Cleveland Cup race if you participate in any 3 CSA designated events. (Priceless).
